Cults vs Witchcraft vs Religion
The Google definition of a cult is "a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object." How is it that the definition of cult includes the word religion, yet we treat cults and religions vastly differently? The Google definition of religion is "the belief in and worship of a superhuman power or powers, especially a God or gods." Both of these definitions contain synonyms for devotion and worship, yet cult beliefs seem more drastic than religious beliefs. Of course, that interpretation will be different for anyone, but I want to examine the relationship between cults and witchcraft as I don't have a clear distinction in my mind yet. I associate cults with having more sinister rituals and witchcraft with illusion and magic. I'd like to point out that the first link that pops up when I search for "What is the difference between cults and witchcraft" is an article published by The Christian Research Institute. So a religious institution is trying to make these distinctions between two belief systems that it doesn't support. I don't want to come across as bitter towards religion, but I certainly am skeptical about it. Anyways, in cults, there is generally a charismatic leader who seems to have brainwashed his/her members with various beliefs. However, occult translates to "that which is hidden" and contains vast and undefined meanings. In many occult practices, there is a master leader to lead the believers through the rituals, similar to cult leaders. Throughout some research, I began to wonder if cults formed from sections of the occult. I couldn't find anything to support my idea, but since the two are similar, it would make sense if one was born from the other. Occult beliefs are overearching and have a wide range of ideas, whereas cults follow a more specified religion or idea, and that inspiration had to come from somewhere. Many of the secret societies that we talked about in class reminded me of cults that I've seen on TV shows. Both are separated from society and have someone at the top running things. This is just speculation, but I'm curious as to how cults and the occult are intertwined.
Thanks for this post. This is really interesting and insightful. I had never given much thought to the connections between cult and occult. But you are absolutely correct to point some of these links. Both have negative connotations, though occult has gained more acceptance in recent years. Both involve the manipulation of belief. I think most of the secret societies we have mentioned in class are based on the belief of "secret knowledge" that can be attained only through certain ceremonies. This would be a great discussion for class. Great blog post.
