Modern Witch University

 Modern Witch University is an institution that offers online classes for those wanting to learn more about modern magic and the history of witchcraft.

The university was first established in 1989 as a retail shop and healing center in San Fransisco. They offer interactive classes and events to those who sign up such as a Witches Sabbat from Feburary 2-4th and a crystal magic intensive. The witches sabbat is a double event feature with the Hortocculture which is a celebration of green witchcraft. The crystal magic intensive is offered as a five-class bootcamp for $175 where students focus on their "crystal familiars". 

Although they have a lot of classes about the history of witchcraft, the newer classes added focus on contemporary magic such as: Black Rose witchcraft, modern conjuring, spiritual cleansing, blue lotus reiki, and blue rose faery. The university also offers internships. 

No accredited university has a class about how to use witchcraft, so I think it's so interesting that this community made their own university. They have pictures of some of the speakers they have hosted in the past and even a podcast at the bottom of the website. 

There's also a Facebook page with over 1000 people that announces new events and speakers. However, one ad on Facebook advertises a psychic witch retreat but the image has got to be AI-generated 



One class that I would be interested in taking for research purposes is the Order of the Starry Dragon. This is part of the course description: "Learn to channel energy more effectively and how to turn your perceptive psychic abilities into projective abilities as we journey through the worlds and align ourselves with the spiritual properties of Space, Time, Matter, Energy, and Quintessence. Advance your mediumship skills and make new partnerships with high-level spirits as we learn to bridge the spiritual and material worlds through ecstatic transfiguration." I didn't realize that quintessence was a physical thing but it can be improved. I also think this class would be interesting because I feel like with the rise in popularity of fantasy books, topics that involve magic and dragons is attracting more people to it. Specifically, this class offered reminds me of Fourth Wing and Iron Flame because students at a university use magic to connect telepathically with dragons and fight in war. Between those books, the A Court of Thorns and Roses series, and the Game of Thrones series, it doesn't surprise me that the belief in this type of magic is on the rise. And social media makes these book reviews spread so quickly, I'm sure some people are more prone to believing all that was written. Instagram made me start reading the Fourth Wing series and A Court of Thorns and Roses series, so of course afterwards I was more susceptible to thinking about magic in real life. I wonder if the rise in published fantasy books will promote more segments of witchcraft and increasing popularity, or if it will make people think that the magic is too far fetched. Green witchcraft seems much more achievable than witchcraft about dragons.

  In the reading from this week, I came across a passage that talks about Adam and Eve and how that story may have inspired the notion that accused women witches are more dangerous than male witches. It got me thinking about how Eve is portrayed in the story from Genesis and how knowing the story impacts the way we think. And honestly, it makes me really mad. Men assumed women's bodies were weaker and therefore easier to fall to the devil. This thought probably comes from the Bible because, of course, it was Eve who was susceptible to the serpent and ate the apple. Witchcraft & Religion

  Everything we've talked about so far this semester regarding strange magic, I have a hard time separating magic from religion. Many religious stories from the Bible demonstrate Jesus and his disciples performing miracles to help those in need. I remember one story where Jesus cured a man of the blindness he had for his whole life. When I first heard this story, I took it for what it was, I was attending a private Christian elementary school at the time anyway. But now in class, we've been discussing the rituals witches would perform or how the cunningfolk would help people. Why is it that our society is more prone to take the Bible for its word, but laugh at magic performed hundreds of years ago? I'm pretty sure that if I was stuck in my small hometown my entire life, I would start searching for ways to keep myself occupied too. Cults vs Witchcraft vs Religion

 The Google definition of a cult is "a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object." How is it that the definition of cult includes the word religion, yet we treat cults and religions vastly differently? The Google definition of religion is "the belief in and worship of a superhuman power or powers, especially a God or gods." Both of these definitions contain synonyms for devotion and worship, yet cult beliefs seem more drastic than religious beliefs. Of course, that interpretation will be different for anyone, but I want to examine the relationship between cults and witchcraft as I don't have a clear distinction in my mind yet. I associate cults with having more sinister rituals and witchcraft with illusion and magic.
